Greencastle - An Ideal Touring Base
The village of Greencastle itself has a bustling and colourful harbour with fishing vessels, pleasure boats and the Lough Foyle Ferry coming and going on a regular basis. The fishing boats provide the fresh fish that has made Kealys Seafood Bar famous. The regions rich maritime history is depicted in the Inishowen Maritime Museum located on the waterfront. There is a wonderfully scenic shore walk from Greencastle to the nearby town of Moville. A shorter coastal footpath passes northwards in front of the apartments.
History and Heritage
The ruins of Northburgh Castle overlooks the apartments. It was built in 1305 by Richard De Burgo in an attempt to subdue the O'Donnell and O'Doherty Clans. Just beyond this castle is a Martello Tower which was built in 1801 in response to the threat of a Napoleonic Invasion. Other historic/heritage sites in the wider Inishowen area include the Doagh Famine Village near Ballyliffin, the Military Museum at Fort Dunree and the ancient Grianan of Aileach at Burt. The Historic Walled City of Derry is well worth a visit - the Tower Museum and a walking tour of the city walls is recommended.
Wild Atlantic Way
The apartments lie along the route of the Wild Atlantic Way which hugs the coastline of the Inishowen Peninsula. The visitor can use this route to explore this ruggedly beautiful Peninsula. Banbas Crown at Malin Head is Irelands most northerly point and is one of 3 Signature points on the Wild Atlantic Way in Donegal.
